Metal Shears for More than Plate and Sheet

While the vast majority of the metal shears we sell are for cutting plate metal and sheet metal, there are a few other shapes of metal out there that can be sheared, such as round bars and flat bars and rebar and angle iron. Many of these can be cut with a multi-station ironworker, but there are also stand-alone machines available for these various functions. One that we carry is the angle iron shear, which is our primary focus on this page.

What’s the Angle on Angle Iron Shears?

The angle iron shear. Seems from a casual perspective that this device doesn’t rank very high on the totem pole of metal working machinery. Fact of the matter is, there have been tens of thousands of these angle cutting shears sold over the years. You have probably seen them countless times and not really noticed it.

If you are familiar with welding trucks and their appearance, then you will have seen one of these angle iron shears mounted on one side or the other of the back of that truck. (Welding trucks are typically a dual rear tire heavy duty truck, with industrial gas tanks and rolls of rubber gas line.) That’s just one example of an industry use of the venerable, yet simple to use, angle iron shear. There are many, many more.

Because they are very portable and can be moved to the jobsite with ease, these angle iron cutting machines are popular with the workman who put them to good use. How many industries need frame work made out of angle iron material that can be custom built right on the site where the framework is needed?

For fabricators, the angle iron shear is a must. A key aspect of this tool is its ease of use. Ladies and gentlemen, you simply grab the handle and pull in a downward motion until you hear the blades finish cutting the angle iron. As quick as that and your angle iron piece part is ready, either cut to length or if you just had the end squared off.

Up to this point we have discussed the portability of this simple but valuable asset, now we must give the shops their due, as this cutting machine is in every fab shop and maintenance department across the fruited plain. If you make your living in the metal working business with a slant towards fabrication, then this piece of equipment is just too simple and too convenient not to own.

Give Me the “Meat and Potatoes” of Angle Iron Shears

The angle iron shear currently offered by Bud's Machine Tools is designed to cut up to 2" x 2" x 1/4" angle iron at maximum capacity. This metalworking marvel is great for taking on the job site on the back of a truck or using in the shop when a saw isn't available to cut the angle iron. This shear would be exceptionally useful in job shops or on the farm where angle iron might be used for building gates, signs, or any kind of steel supports.

Because this shear accomplishes its maximum capacity through the action of shearing, one leg of the angle iron is slightly distorted during the shearing action. To avoid this distortion, we offer the shear in two different configurations. The standard configuration is equipped to shear up to 1/4" thick angle, but will, because of the shearing action, distort lighter material. A special blade combination is also offered for cutting 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/8" up to 2" x 2" x 3/16" with very minimal distortion to the angle iron.
